|Mount Edith Cavell, Jasper National Park, AB |
In 1914 Edith Louisa Cavell, an English nurse, was accused of aiding Allied prisoners to escape and rejoin their units (a charge which she admitted), claiming it was her sworn duty to save lives. Under German (and even British) military law those actions constituted treason and after a quick trial she was shot, despite the intercession of the American ambassador. To the British, however, Edith Cavell became a symbol of heroism and was known as the "Angel of Mercy." She was so honoured in the naming of both the magnificent peak and the nearby Angel Glacier.
