Moraine Lake, Banff National Park, AB
Named from the picturesque pile of glacial debris which so obviously forms the dam holding back this body of water, Moraine Lake is one of the most photographed and painted sites in Canada. "The Valley of the Ten Peaks," in which Moraine Lake is nestled was originally named "Desolation" by Allen & Wilcox, in contrast to the adjoining "Paradise Valley." One has to ponder at the variations of experience that inspired the two prominent mountaineers to attach such a dreary name to such an incredibly beautiful place. For obvious reasons, the original name did not stick.
