Disappearing Landmarks, New Norway, AB
Visible for many a prairie mile, these towering giants are disappearing at a rapid rate. For years grain was brought to the elevators and stored until it could be moved by train across the country. Now with the "warehouse on wheels" systems, they are not being utilized. Considered a fire hazard and no longer deemed "economical" to maintain, municipalities are faced with deciding their fate. The decision usually comes down to cost. Although it is disappointing to see them come down, it is somewhat heartening to know that they are not all being discarded and destroyed. The thick timbers that are salvaged are planed and reused in new structures.
