Mount Assiniboine Assiniboine is the most prominent summit of the southern Canadian Rockies and is located on the border between British Columbia and Alberta. The mountain was named by George Dawson who, it is said, thought the mountain reminded him of the plumes of smoke rising from the Assiniboine Indians' teepees. Now known as the Nakoda First Nation, the indigenous people of the area have also been known as the Stoney Indian tribe. The name Stoney derived from the custom of cooking food by placing hot stones in containers of water. |
